[Day 23 - EM] Bokkens Before Breakfast (Iaijutsu Pt. 2)

A series of tatami floored rooms ring the dojo. At any given time, wooden and bamboo practice swords can be heard clacking or the sensei lecturing students. Peculiarly enough, compared to most dojo, these sensei speak with more questions than orders. Here, one corner of the ground floor has been reserved for guests to practice their own martial arts. At the center, a larger tatami floor spreads against a short conclave of bleachers. The east wall is occupied by a trio of shrines to Mirumoto, Shinsei and Togashi. A single stone at the base marks the grave of Mirumoto Hojatsu. Akin to the shrine in the village, a banner hangs with the words "Neither Will I."

Kenichi is intrigued to see how the training goes with the sling.

"It is a happy coincidence that I will see you train our Shiba friend, Ide-Sama. I have seen one used on one or two occasions as it is used a great deal by the Sparow, but I never learned how to use on or saw someone else grasping the art."

Kazusa continues her draw practice, then it flows into a kata. It is slow and deliberate, a simple form of the Bayushi school, complete with a surprise flick of the wakizashi from nowhere at the end. She replaces the bokken and then goes to sit, silently pondering, but not in any particular meditation discipline.

"I am not sure I would be able to dedicate the required time necessary to do the process justice. My career now, as long as I actually have one, seems to be more headed in the courtly direction for good, lest war breaks out again, in which case I will be a foot soldier as before. My martial skills have always been mainly concentrated on iaijutsu so that I may exact justice when required.

I will however watch with interest. It will remind me of happier times as I think of those few occasions I saw friends learning, or trying to learn, how to use one."

The Monk arrives and bows to the assembled crowd she has brought a Bo with her, however it has been altered to have wooden shaped axe heads at each end, Pointed in opposite directions... She seems to be practicing using the unusual weapon .. stopping making notes then continuing.

Yamada arrives at the dojo for the second day in a row, and again like the day before there's a determination in her. She begins practicing her draw again, not with a bokken but with a blade. Again, and again, and again.

Michio re-enters from the courtyard, having learned something which he needed to know. He sets the sacks and the silks to one side, then approaches Yamada from the front right, so she can see him clearly and he is not in the path of her blade.

He bows low but says nothing.

Yamada let her katana stay in her saya and bowed in return.
"Michio-san," she said. "It's still as I said, the first strike that worries me. The one I will probably have to take."

Michio straightens. "Hai. We sometimes forget that Kakita won a hundred victories before there was such a thing as dueling. The first strike is often the last."

Then he smiles. "Fortunately it is not twelve hundred years ago. We have learned a few things which may be of aid. Let us work through some of the newer waza - there may be something there we can use."
