[Day 23 EA] Ladies' Day Out part 2

One warm spot in the village this winter is Kenichi’s shop where a makeshift kiln is lit at all hours. The place is unmistakable by the wisps of smoke emanating from the backyard. Kenichi, cleverly, has decided to exploit the heat of his trade, and has set up a covered porch against the wall of the kiln room. It acts as a makeshift tavern, and has become a warm spot for social gatherings.

[Day 23 EA] Ladies' Day Out part 2

Postby Isawa Akiko » Thu Mar 02, 2017 1:35 am

The phoenix-patterned umbrella is set in the eaves of the makeshift teashop, still acting as a banner for all who pass by. Now that shopping is over, the ladies have come for tea (and maybe some more shopping of various pottery goods). Akiko orders tea, but spends a few moments browsing the earthernwares on display. The ladies need a chance to come out of the hold and relax a little, after all, before they all get down to the serious business of tea and chatter.

((OOC: A continuation from here. Mainly for those invited, but feel free to get caught up in the action if you wish.))

Simple things, clay and glaze.

And all utterly beyond me.

Yukari didn't exactly revel in her shortcomings, but she appreciated a chance to recognize them.

Janisha's eyes move over the creations of the potter, although nothing seems to draw her eye quite yet. Mostly she appreciates the warmth to be found here.

I don't know how the Dragon do it.

Kyoumi spends some time folding the scraps of silk she has acquired and folding them into the bottom of her bag. "The finest pots and vases require clays found in the Mantis Islands," she says cheerfully. "That is what is required for the white porcelains. They sometimes discuss adding a pottery grandmaster sensei. But there hasn't been enough competition for the role. Though the art is growing considerably more popular, unusually, even if there is no more access to Mantis clay."

"Perhaps. Though I prefer to think of it as part of the deeper understanding of the lessons of Kurohito-no-kami has been teaching in the halls of the artisans of the Crane over these last twenty years." Kyoumi picks up a small vase, colored with a variety of bright glazes, turning to look at it.

"Pottery is one of the hardest arts to make without flaw. With...perfection. The materials are expensive. The glazes difficult to make and rare. The perfect timing is required to the kiln. The slightest dust in the air, the slip of a brush, if the clay is too wet or too dry...all these can ruin a piece. And then, once your craft is created, often it is cast aside. Used to hold another, more transient art. Or a meal. Or...things people care little on. People don't look at the container once the item is contained."

Kyoumi bows from respect to the potter.

Akiko has found a bowl she rather likes. Rough and sturdy-looking, with an odd mottled quality to the glaze that makes it look as though it had been carved rather than crafted.

Mao listened to Kyoumi's explanation with some interest, and noted the apparent value of Mantis clay for later. She was otherwise very taken with all the pottery arrayed on the shelves, never having been exposed to ceramics before. She may have had no use for such things, but she could appreciate them for one afternoon.

Kyoumi picks up the vase she is looking at turning it. "In any event, the Art has changed. Kurohito-no-kami has taught us that nothing can be perfect always. Either it is perfect within the moment, but is lost to the transience of time, or is imperfect but resistant to the passage of time. Pottery has grown more popular because it has become the art that shows us, more than any of our other arts, how one takes the imperfect...and makes beauty in the imperfections."

Her voice is soft and thoughtful. This is something very important to her.

"Kyoumi-san, what do you think of 'wabi-sabi' as it relates to pottery, then?" This should be an interesting discussion.
