In his dreams, he is drowning again.

He struggles out of reflex, trying to swim to the surface of the turbulent waters he can feel choking the breath out of him. A body will struggle long after the will to live is gone, echoes somewhere in the vagaries of memories. He kicks his feet, grasps his hands, and pulls.

But nothing comes.

The fire in his chest grows into a bright, consuming flame. Pain wracks his limbs, his abdomen, his chest. And then... the pain was distant. He did not need to struggle anymore. He felt himself rising in the waters drowning him... or was it sinking... it was so very hard to tell. There was a sound, however, growing louder and louder with every second.

Someone was chopping wood outside their small, stone house, and a young boy woke up to the sound. He moved to the window eagerly, to see with his eyes and hear with his ears. He breathed deeply of the cold mountain air, taking in the scents of the village beyond. Today was going to be a good day.

In the house of the Master Sensei of the Iron Mountain Dojo, the small shrine kept in the room of an old ise zumi is closed and covered with white paper. A table is set up with incense and a a single candle.

And the world continues on.
